Weekend Recap | A Tale of Two Games for the Tri City Tide

The Tri City Tide walked away from this past weekend with mixed results, splitting a tough back-to-back that started on a high note but ended with a tough loss. Saturday's 104–95 win over the Tri-State Admirals was followed by a 122–87 defeat at the hands of the Halifax Hoopers on Sunday. After a grueling stretch, the Tide now shift focus to this weekend’s back-to-back in Moncton against Albany — a matchup some have already written off. But if there’s one thing this team thrives on, it’s proving people wrong.

What Went Right

Saturday vs. Tri-State Admirals (W 104-95):
The Tide looked like a team on a mission. Led by Devon Andrews’ 25 points and clutch free throws late, Tri City played with control and confidence, especially in the third quarter, where they outscored the Admirals 37-29. Kyler Haynes added a crucial 20 points, showing his ability to create offense off the dribble and knock down timely shots. Marc McLaughlin chipped in 16, and Douglas Thomas pulled down 12 boards, anchoring the team’s rebounding battle.

On both ends, the Tide were aggressive and active. The defense created 11 steals and 7 blocks, and they won the rebounding battle 55-51. It was a complete effort from a squad that looked locked in from tip-off to buzzer.

What Went Wrong

Sunday @ Halifax Hoopers (L 122-87):
Fatigue showed quickly, and the Hoopers took full advantage. Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the Tide struggled out of the gate, getting outscored 32-16 in the first quarter. Halifax’s perimeter shooting and interior dominance made it hard to mount any comeback.

Tri City gave up 63 rebounds and 58 points in the paint, unable to match the Hoopers’ physicality or energy. While Christian Ndiaye battled for 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Kyler Haynes poured in another 23, the rest of the team looked a step slow. The back-to-back caught up to them, and Halifax made sure to make them pay.

What Needs to Change

If the Tide want to shock the league and sweep Albany this weekend, a few key things must fall into place:

  • Consistency in execution: The difference between Saturday and Sunday was night and day. Tri City needs to bring the energy and focus of Saturday’s win across both games this weekend.

  • Defensive intensity: Allowing 122 points simply can’t happen again. Albany, a top team, will punish any breakdowns. Closeouts, rotations, and rebounding have to improve.

  • Bench production: The starters logged heavy minutes this weekend. With another back-to-back incoming, depth and support from the bench will be critical.

  • Limit turnovers: 18 turnovers against Halifax added to their troubles. Against Albany’s athletic defense, ball security will be non-negotiable.

What We Can Look Forward To

This weekend, the Tri City Tide host one of the most anticipated back-to-backs of the season as the Albany Patroons come to Crandall University. Some have already written these games off as sure losses for Tri City—but this team isn’t reading those headlines.

They’re building something. They’re finding chemistry. And with stars like Devon Andrews heating up, Haynes stepping into a leadership role, and the team rallying behind Coach, don’t count the Tide out just yet.

Two games. Home court. A chance to make a statement.

Tip-offs are set for Saturday and Sunday night. Moncton, get ready—we’re just getting started.
