“I’m thankful and grateful for a second season with the Tri-City Tide. I’m ready to raise the standard, chase more wins and make this city proud. Season 20 for me is about to be EPIC. I am excited to play for Coach Todd again, it’s now time to finish what we started. I’m back and ready to do what’s needed to help this team win.”

The Tri-City Tide have officially re-signed veteran forward Doug Thomas, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to experience, leadership and a winning culture as the team looks ahead to the upcoming season. The move marks Thomas’s 20th professional season, a milestone that reflects both longevity and consistency at the highest levels of the game.

Experience at the Highest Levels

Thomas brings a résumé few players can match. A product of the University of Iowa, he made a significant impact with the Hawkeyes, earning Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year honors, recognition that highlighted both his production and his ability to elevate teammates.

His professional career has been truly global. Thomas has competed across Mexico, Venezuela, Sweden, Canada, and the United States, adapting to different systems and styles while consistently providing veteran presence and physicality in the frontcourt.

At the NBA level, his experience includes Summer League appearances with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, and Phoenix Suns, along with training camp invitations from the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers, further underscoring the respect he has earned throughout his career.

Beyond playing, Thomas has also contributed to the game from the sidelines. His time as an assistant coach with the Mount Allison Mounties strengthened his understanding of player development, leadership and teaching the game as these qualities would seamlessly translate into his role with the Tide.

Veteran Presence and Early Impact

Thomas made his Tide debut on March 15 against Halifax and immediately delivered the physicality, composure and professionalism that defined the franchise’s inaugural season. More than a contributor on the floor, he became a stabilizing presence for a young team navigating its first year.

His on-court connection with guard De’Monte Nelson quickly emerged as a cornerstone of the Tide’s identity. The duo developed strong pick-and-roll chemistry, while Thomas’s leadership helped Nelson grow into his role as a floor general. In difficult road environments and late-game situations, Thomas consistently provided calm, direction and accountability.

Grinding Through the Season

As the season progressed, Thomas’s value became increasingly evident during the most demanding stretches of the schedule. Through back-to-backs, travel and adversity, he remained steady and reliable.

Between April and May, Thomas delivered a series of rugged, impactful performances, anchoring the defense, controlling the glass and providing timely scoring when needed. Notable outings included:

  • 13 points, 13 rebounds vs. Tri-State (May 24)

  • 11 rebounds, 4 steals in a May 25 win over Tri-State

  • 9 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals vs. Halifax (May 23)

  • 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals on March 28 in one of the team’s key victories

His efficiency around the rim, physical post defense, and high basketball IQ helped stabilize the frontcourt while creating opportunities for teammates such as James Towns, Kyler Haynes, and D’evon Andrews.

Looking Ahead

With Thomas re-signed, the Tide have retained a proven veteran capable of contributing at both the power forward and center positions. His return also creates valuable mentorship opportunities for developing players such as Christian Ndiaye, while complementing newly signed Fenley Jean-Baptiste, who averaged 15.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game with the Tri-State Admirals last season.

As the Tide prepares for the upcoming season, Thomas’s experience, versatility and leadership will continue to shape the team’s identity. Entering his 20th professional season, Doug Thomas remains a standard-setter, mentor, and foundational piece of the Tri-City Tide.
