A Hometown Leader Returns

For James French, joining the Tri-City Tide felt more like a homecoming than a new beginning. Born and raised in Moncton, French has been a familiar name in the local basketball scene for years. From starring at BMHS and representing Team New Brunswick at Nationals three times, to winning an ACAA championship with Mount Allison and later earning All-Star honours at Crandall University, his journey has always been rooted in leadership, hard work, and a love for the game.

This season, French brought that same energy to the Tide, becoming a trusted presence both on and off the court. With a strong background in coaching and youth development, plus a full-time teaching role in the city, he quickly became a connector, bridging the gap between teammates and the local community and helping international players feel right at home in Moncton.

Reliable Shooting and Rebounding

On the floor, French did exactly what was asked of him. A steady 3-and-D guard, he knocked down shots when it counted and played tough defense across multiple positions. He finished the season shooting 38.5% from three and 45.8% overall from the field, while also grabbing 2.8 rebounds per game. In three different games, he pulled down a season-high six boards, showing he could mix it up in the paint when needed. Whether he was starting or coming off the bench, French brought energy, effort, and consistency.

Notable Games Include:

• 8 points and 3 rebounds vs. New York (May 16)
• 6 points and 4 rebounds at Halifax (May 10)
• 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 steal vs. Tri-State (March 29)
• 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal vs. Tri-State (May 25)

A Locker Room Leader

Even though he was one of the younger guys on the roster, French quickly earned the respect of his teammates and coaches. He showed up to practice with the same intensity as game night, and his attitude made a real difference in building the culture. Coach Rob Spon leaned on him as someone who could lead by example, staying calm, focused, and always ready to compete.

Giving Back to the Game

Off the court, French played a huge role in the Tide’s youth camps and community outreach. With his teaching background and passion for mentoring, he was in his element leading drills, talking to kids, and sharing what the game has taught him. It wasn’t just about basketball, it was about inspiring the next generation to work hard, stay humble, and love the game the way he does.

Final Thoughts

James French made a real impact in his first year with the Tri-City Tide. He brought shooting, defense, leadership, and a deep connection to the community. For fans in Moncton, he’s more than just a player, he’s someone they’ve watched grow up in the game, and now, someone they’re proud to see represent the city at the pro level.
